This project illustrates karst formation and their locations. Several locations that have large to medium cavities in our region affecting construction are presented at this project. Site investigation techniques and engineering solutions are also proposed in this project.
Chapter Two Presents a review for all aspects of sinkholes. It include the definition of sinkhole, what causes sinkholes, how do sinkholes form, Limestone formation, theories that dealt with the formation of sinkhole, and sinkholes types and there shapes, finally it discuss the karst hydrology and its effect on sinkhole formation.
Chapter Three presents Nablus city as an example that has many sites having large number of cavities. These cavities have a large risk so they will be investigated to propose a suitable solution for each one.
Chapter Four discusses site investigation techniques to find out location of cavities if any, including geophysical exploration methods.
Chapter Five presents alternative proposed solutions for sites where karst formations are existing or possible. It also presents the most common methods of excavation and earthwork preparation of sites that have cavities. And suggest solution for the study case of the reservoir in Hebron city. The solutions are including improvement by grouting, pile foundation and deep foundation technique.
